Saskatchewan Housing Benefit

The Ministry of Social Services is distributing benefit payments for basic needs, basic maintenance, and special needs in person at service centres across the province.

If you receive your payment by direct deposit, you will receive it as usual in your bank account.

Saskatchewan Housing Benefit is a monthly benefit that helps eligible Saskatchewan renters with their shelter costs (rent and utilities). The Saskatchewan Housing Benefit is co-funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan under the National Housing Strategy.

1. Benefits

The monthly amount renters are eligible to receive depends on their household size and the percentage of their income spent on shelter costs:

    Single and couples   Single or couple with one dependant   Single or couple with two or more dependants
Households that spend 35 to 45 per cent of their income on shelter   $175   $225   $275
Households that spend more than 45 per cent of their income on shelter   $225   $275   $325

2. Eligibility

Renters are eligible for the benefit if they:

  • Spend 35 per cent or more of their annual before-tax household income on shelter costs (rent and utilities);
  • Have less than $300,000 in household assets; and
  • Have an annual before-tax household income at or below:
    Single and couples   Single or couple with one dependant   Single or couple with two or more dependants
Annual Income Limit   $43,100   $52,900   $63,800

Renters are not eligible for the benefit if they:

  • receive shelter support from another Government of Saskatchewan income assistance or training program;
  • rent from a housing authority under the Social Housing Program;
  • are a sponsored newcomer to Canada; or
  • are a full-time post-secondary student.

There are two additional SHB streams that provide financial support for people in vulnerable living situations: the Supportive Housing Stream and the Seeking Safety from Interpersonal Violence Stream.

3. How to Apply

Complete the Saskatchewan Housing Benefit application using one of the following options. Both applications are the same. You only need to complete one application.

If you choose to apply using the PDF form, you can either fill out the application on your computer or print it and complete it by hand.

Once you have completed the PDF application, forward it along with all required documents to Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) by:
