Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Disabilities

This grant provides up to $22,000 per program year.

The services and/or equipment covered by these grants may include:

• Tutors
• Note takers
• Interpreters
• Readers
• Alternate format
• Assistive technology (computer, software, etc.)
• Specialized transportation (to and from school)
• Attendant care for studies
• Reimbursements for learning disability assessments

Saskatchewan Student Aid for Students with Disabilities

To be eligible, you must:

• Have either a permanent OR persistent or prolonged disability defined as:
  • "permanent disability" means any impairment, including a physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication or sensory impairment – or a functional limitation – that restricts the ability of a person to perform the daily activities necessary to pursue studies at a post-secondary school level or to participate in the labour force and that is expected to remain with the person for the person's expected life.
  • "persistent or prolonged disability" means any impairment, including a physical, mental, intellectual, cognitive, learning, communication or sensory impairment – or a functional limitation – that restricts the ability of a person to perform the daily activities necessary to pursue studies at a post-secondary school level or to participate in the labour force and has lasted, or is expected to last, for a period of at least 12 months but is not expected to remain with the person for the person's expected life.
• Be enrolled in a full-time or part-time program at a designated post-secondary institution;
• Provide written confirmation of the exceptional education-related services or equipment needed;
• Provide proof of either a permanent OR persistent or prolonged disability by having your doctor fill out the Verification of Disability Form. As an alternative, the doctor can provide a medical certificate describing the functional limitations of your disability and whether it is expected to be permanent OR persistent or prolonged; and
• Have no outstanding receipts from previous services and equipment grant funding.

Additional Information

• If you are enrolled in a post-secondary program you must first submit a separate Saskatchewan Student Aid application to determine your eligibility and financial need.
• Students with a learning disability are to obtain a Learning Disability Assessment (e.g., psycho-educational assessment) to verify their disability; and
• If you have provided proof or verification of your disability previously, you do not have to provide it again. However, students with persistent or prolonged disabilities will be required to self-attest every year to maintain access to student aid benefits.

Before applying for the Canada-Saskatchewan Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Disabilities, talk to the disability advisor at your educational institution and/or recognized disability organization (e.g., the CNIB, Neil Squire Society, the Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services or the Learning Disabilities Association). The advisor will help with the application process.

The Student Service Centre must receive your application and all supporting documentation at least 30 days before the end of your study period. It is recommended you start the application process at least two months before your classes start.

Grant payments are issued through direct deposit. Please ensure to complete the Direct Deposit form located within your application package.

For example, you can share documentation that verifies your disability, including medical or psycho-educational assessment and/or alternate documentation, along with the required accommodations through myBlueprint. Successful transition for students with disabilities entering post-secondary education requires advanced planning. Use the Students with Disabilities: Post-Secondary Education Planning Information to learn more about the documentation you will need, what services and supports are available and where to find them, as well as what Saskatchewan student aid programs are available to help offset education costs.

Grant applications will not be approved if there are outstanding receipts from a previous services and equipment grant. Any unused portion of the grant must be refunded to the Student Service Centre, Ministry of Advanced Education. Payment methods include e-transfer, cheque or money order, made payable to the Student Aid Fund.

Verification of Disability Assessment Fees

Starting in 2024-25, students with a confirmed disability may be reimbursed for disability verification costs, including assessments fees, completion of medical forms or documentation by a qualified medical practitioner. Students are required to pay for their verification costs upfront, and may be eligible for reimbursement under the Grant for Services and Equipment, once the disability is confirmed.
