Becoming a Marriage Commissioner

Learn about the requirements for becoming a civil marriage commissioner and how to apply.

The marriage commissioner appointment and application process is set out in The Marriage Act, 2021 and The Marriage Regulations, 2022.

Individuals applying to become civil marriage commissioners must complete the application form and provide the following:

  • a clear criminal record check obtained within the last six months;
  • a copy of their resume;
  • three reference letters; and
  • the application fee.

Application fees can be paid by cheque or money order and are as follows:

  • $100 for a term (one day) appointment; or
  • $200 for a five-year term appointment.

Marriage commissioner fees, including mileage, are determined by the marriage commissioner after discussions with the parties involved.
