Amplifying Post-Secondary Student Voices In Saskatchewan

Released on April 4, 2023

A new Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Student Council will give students opportunities to provide feedback on a broad range of post-secondary topics through direct engagement with the Ministry of Advanced Education. Students will provide advice, insight and feedback on policies, emerging issues and trends in post-secondary education.

"Engaging students in conversations around their post-secondary experience will help us better understand what helps them to succeed," Advanced Education Minister Gordon Wyant said. "This student council will give us a platform to connect with students and gain valuable insights and perspectives."

The council will be made up of approximately 20 students with a variety of interests, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives from post-secondary institutions across Saskatchewan. The council will begin operating in fall 2023 and students will serve on the council for one academic year. A new council will be selected the following year.

"Members of this student council will reflect Saskatchewan's diverse post-secondary education sector," Wyant said. "Each post-secondary institution will nominate students who are interested in shaping the future of post-secondary education in Saskatchewan."

Institutions will nominate students based on criteria that include geographic location, diversity group and type of credential. Students being nominated will need to provide examples of leadership, teamwork skills and community impact. Students interested in joining the council can reach out to the Ministry of Advanced Education at AEStudentCouncil@gov.sk.ca to be directed to the correct contact at their institution. A ministry selection committee will review nominations and select students for the council.
