This morning, Premier Scott Moe joined dignitaries, Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans and public servants for the annual Service of Remembrance for the Public Service, paying tribute to those who have served and those who gave their lives in times of war. 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid, where Canadian forces joined allies in a battle against the German occupied port of Dieppe in northern France during the Second World War.
"Today we honour those who served and continue to serve our country," Moe said. "This service shows our commitment to never forget those who fought and still fight for our freedom and safety. For them we are eternally grateful."
The service took place in the Legislative Building rotunda. Following the service, the Premier laid a wreath at the Saskatchewan War Memorial located west of the Legislative Building on Memorial Way. The memorial lists the names of Saskatchewan's fallen soldiers from the First and Second World War, Korean War, peacetime and peacekeeping operations and the War in Afghanistan.
The Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial, managed by the Saskatchewan War Memorial Committee, is a website to commemorate Saskatchewan citizens who lost their lives in war. The site features more than 11,000 war casualties and their stories. The site complements the physical war memorial.
