Today, Kindersley MLA Ken Francis on behalf of Social Services Minister Lori Carr, joined community members to turn sod in celebration of a new day program building being constructed in Kindersley.
The Government of Saskatchewan has invested $924,000 into the construction of the new day program building for people with intellectual disabilities, to be operated by West Central Abilities (WCA). The new accessible building will allow for day program supports to be provided to more than 20 people. This new construction will replace an old building currently being used.
"Day programs are an important part of our communities, often providing employment, life skills and social outlets for people with intellectual disabilities," Francis said. "It's exciting that construction will be getting started soon on this project that will benefit so many in our community."
WCA has been supporting people with intellectual disabilities since 1972.
"As an organization, we are honoured to build our community with this new facility that will help us to provide inclusive and diversified services," West Central Abilities Executive Director Kim Edmunds said. "We are thrilled to be able to offer services that will benefit so many in the future from a building uniquely designed for accessibility, growth and development. Great appreciation goes out to all our funders and donors that have made this project possible."
This new day program supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy by creating opportunities for inclusion. Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work that aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
