The Government of Saskatchewan today joined representatives from Habitat for Humanity to officially announce the start of construction for a new build that will support a family in need.
Member of the Legislative Assembly for Yorkton Greg Ottenbreit, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Lori Carr, attended a sod-turning ceremony for a Habitat for Humanity build that will make homeownership a reality for a Yorkton family.
The home will be a four-bedroom, raised bungalow located at 158 Darlington Street East. A basement will also be developed with an additional bedroom to accommodate a growing family. The home is approximately 1,008 square feet, or 93.65 square metres.

- Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home or other Habitat homes. The family purchases their home at fair market value, paying an interest-free, zero down-payment mortgage set at 25 per cent of their annual gross income. Upon completion, the affordable no-interest mortgage is provided by Habitat to partner families with mortgage payments going back for future builds. - The Government of Canada is currently rolling out its National Housing Strategy (NHS), an ambitious 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need, as well as repair and renew more than 300,000 housing units and reduce chronic homelessness by 50 per cent.
- The Government of Canada, through CMHC, along with the Government of Saskatchewan, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), are contributing $65,000 each to build the home through the CMHC-Saskatchewan Bi-Lateral Agreement under the 2017 NHS.
- The Government of Saskatchewan's overall commitment to Habitat totals $12.4 million since 2009. This investment supports Saskatchewan's Housing Strategy goals of ensuring Saskatchewan people have access to affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.

Pursuant to the National Housing Strategy, the Canada-Saskatchewan Bilateral Agreement will invest $449.9 million over the next 10 years, cost matched by the federal and provincial governments, in housing across the province. CMHC and the Government of Saskatchewan have reached agreement on the first three-year action plan.
