Today, Cut Knife-Turtleford MLA Ryan Domotor, on behalf of Social Services Minister Lori Carr, joined community members, dignitaries and group home residents in Wilkie to celebrate the grand opening of a new Prairie Branches group home.
Five people with intellectual disabilities will be calling this new building home. The government is providing more than $295,000 annually to Prairie Branches to operate the group home.
"The opening of this new group home represents another step forward in our government's support of true person-centred community living," MLA Ryan Domotor said. "Our community partners are vital in creating inclusive and accessible communities in Saskatchewan and I want to thank Prairie Branches for their commitment to providing quality services for people with disabilities."
Prairie Branches currently supports 31 people living in their group homes, fourteen people in their supported living program and 48 in day programs in the communities of Wilkie, Unity, Biggar and Kerrobert.
"This home is a wonderful addition to our agency as it helps to provide exceptional quality of life for the residents. We are very thankful that the community of Wilkie was chosen as a priority for a replacement home," Executive Director of Prairie Branches Eunice Washkowsky said. "This fully accessible group home was designed so that persons of all abilities can live and thrive here."
This new group home supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy by creating more residential services for people with intellectual disabilities. Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work that aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
