Today, the Government of Saskatchewan announced annual funding of $4.3 million to Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) for skills training programs. The funding allows the college to deliver a variety of education and skills training programs including Adult Basic Education (ABE), both off and on-reserve, Essential Skills for the Workplace (ESWP), as well as the Skills Training Allocation.ABE and ESWP programs provide adult learners with basic employment skills and workplace experience that leads to either further training or attachment to the labour market. The Skills Training Allocation provides access to accredited training programs that meet the labour market needs of employers across various sectors of the provincial economy. Funding is also provided to support the delivery of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Program.
“As a program deliverer, SIIT plays an important role in providing training for many students across the province,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “We want to ensure everyone in the province has the opportunity to contribute to Saskatchewan’s labour force and economy, and SIIT plays a vital role to make sure Indigenous learners can take advantage of the key training programs available.”
“This province boasts a young and talented Indigenous population willing to meet the challenges of the post-COVID economy,” SIIT President and CEO Riel Bellegarde said. “This critical support from the government will ensure SIIT can continue to innovate and offer programs to meet the needs of these Saskatchewanians while supporting the provincial labour market.”
The SIIT network consists of three principal campus sites, eight strategically-located career and trades training centres, two mobile job connection units, and more than 35 community learning sites.
