Today, Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gordon Wyant joined Highways and Infrastructure Minister and Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit, as well as representatives from the Good Spirit School Division to announce planning has begun for a $19 million renovation at Yorkton Regional High School.
The investment is part of the government’s $7.5 billion two-year capital plan to build a strong Saskatchewan and stimulate economic recovery following the pandemic.
“Our government recognizes the importance of maintaining our existing education infrastructure, to ensure students and staff have a welcoming learning environment for years to come,” Wyant said. “These school improvements will serve the Yorkton community and will support job growth in our province.”
The renovation will include upgrades to the schools site maintenance, fire suppression, exterior and replacement of the roof. These renovations will ensure the safety and comfort of students and staff in the school for years to come.
Final details of this phased renovation project will be developed by the school division and the design team.
Yorkton Regional High School was built in 1965 and has had a number of ongoing upgrades and maintenance provided through the Government of Saskatchewan’s Preventative Maintenance and Renewal Program.
“We are thrilled to be selected to receive this major capital funding that allows for the upgrades at Yorkton Regional High School,” Good Spirit School Division Board Chair Bob Simpson said. “Thank you to Minister Wyant and the Government of Saskatchewan for providing the resources needed to ensure the Yorkton Regional High School continues to live their motto of ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’ for another 50 years.”
Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $1.9 billion toward school infrastructure projects. This includes 57 new or replacement schools as well as 28 major renovations.
Since 2013-14, Saskatchewan Education’s Preventative Maintenance and Renewal program has provided approximately $281 million to school divisions and the Conseil des écoles fransaskoises to proactively address maintenance requirements as they arise. These projects support the safety and well-being of our students and school staff, while also ensuring that Saskatchewan schools are built to last well into the future.
