Government Invests in New Day Program Building for Kindersley

The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $924,000 into the construction of a new day program building for people with intellectual disabilities, to be operated by West Central Abilities (WCA).  The new accessible building will allow for day program supports to be provided to more than 20 people.  This new construction will replace an old building previously being used.

“Day programs are an important part of our communities, often providing employment, life skills and social outlets for people with intellectual disabilities,” Kindersley MLA Ken Francis said on behalf of Social Services Minister Lori Carr.  “Our government appreciates the support West Central Abilities provides people with intellectual disabilities.”

WCA has been supporting people with intellectual disabilities since 1972.

“We are extremely grateful for the Government of Saskatchewan’s contribution toward our new facility and it would not be possible without the Government of Saskatchewan’s investment and contributions from the surrounding Rural Municipalities, the Town of Kindersley and multiple other donors,” WCA Executive Director Kim Edmunds said.  “Fundraising will continue until the project is complete and WCA’s portion of the mortgage is paid.

“Our group could not be more excited to get started on construction.  This new facility is designed for future growth to ensure enhanced programing will continue to meet the evolving needs of individuals experiencing disability.  Our programs are designed to benefit individuals in a variety of ways such as increasing self-confidence, and learning life skills that will be transferred to everyday living situations to increase independence, gained enjoyment and interests and being contributing members within one’s community.”

“On behalf of West Central Abilities’ Board of Directors and myself, we are so excited to share this wonderful news with you,” WCAs’ Board of Directors’ Chair Tamara Wiebe said.  “Our long-awaited dream of a new day program facility is becoming a reality.  The board and I would like to extend our thanks to everyone for their extra hard work in making this dream come true.  We are fortunate to have such caring staff who have gone the extra mile, going through drawings, attending numerous meetings, and committing to endless fundraising efforts, thank you!”

This new day program supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy by creating opportunities for inclusion.  Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work that aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
