Ensuring students have a safe and comfortable learning environment is a priority of the Government of Saskatchewan. Since 2013-14, the province has provided funding for preventative maintenance, allowing school divisions around the province to be proactive in addressing maintenance issues and rehabilitation projects within their school facilities.Preventative maintenance and renewal funding has increased from $16.4 million in 2013-14 to $50.4 million in 2019-20.
“We want to be proactive and prevent serious maintenance issues in our schools,” Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gordon Wyant said. “This funding helps school divisions to keep their schools safe and welcoming for all students and staff members.”
The Preventative Maintenance and Renewal (PMR) Program gives school divisions and the Conseil des écoles fransaskoises the flexibility and opportunity to respond to infrastructure needs and repairs before major issues arise.
Over the last two years, Living Sky School Division has used PMR funding for roofing projects at Unity Composite High School, Battleford Central School and for the newly consolidated K-12 school in Cut Knife. The funding has also allowed for aging boilers to be replaced and upgraded at Luseland School, St Vital Catholic School in Battleford and Connaught Elementary School in North Battleford. These important projects help to ensure the safety and comfort of the learning environments for both students and staff.
“The PMR funding that Living Sky School Division receives is important for the timely maintenance of our schools to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, staff and visitors,” Living Sky School Division Board Chair Ronna Pethick said.
PMR funding is distributed to school divisions based on the size of the school facilities.
