The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to recognize November 18 – 22 as International Education Week. We celebrate this week with more than 100 countries to raise awareness and understanding of international education and the benefits it provides.International education is an important driver for Saskatchewan’s future economic and cultural growth, and a key component of our 2020-30 Growth Plan. Our growing network of international relationships provides opportunities for Saskatchewan students to study abroad in some of our key market destinations.
“Connecting our students to international opportunities helps to advance our province’s trading relationships while equipping the next generation of Saskatchewan students with global experiences they can bring home and use to innovate and grow Saskatchewan’s economy,” Advanced Education Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor said. “The link between Saskatchewan’s Post-Secondary International Education Strategy and Strengthening Saskatchewan’s trade relationships is strong.”
Since the strategy was released in 2014 the province is on target for meeting the goals set out in the Strategy.
These include:
- increasing the number of international students in Saskatchewan;
- increasing the number of Saskatchewan students studying abroad; and
- increasing the number and value of international research partnerships.
Since 2012, we have increased the number of international post-secondary students studying in our province by 65 per cent. Last year, there were more than 8,400 international students studying in Saskatchewan from over 130 countries. There were also more than 900 Saskatchewan post-secondary students who travelled to more than 60 different countries for experiences studying abroad.
Government works closely with Saskatchewan’s post-secondary partners to build international opportunities to advance and commercialize research in areas where Saskatchewan institutions are global leaders, such as medical isotopes and nuclear medicine, vaccines, carbon capture and storage, additive manufacturing, precision agriculture, plant genomics and post-traumatic stress disorder.
