Governments Of Canada And Saskatchewan Team Up With Habitat For Humanity To Begin Construction On A Home In Prince Albert

Released on May 10, 2019

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are collaborating with Habitat for Humanity in Prince Albert to help support another Saskatchewan family in need of a safe and affordable place to call home.

Today, Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Crown Investments Corporation Minister and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Prince Albert Carlton Joe Hargrave, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) Paul Merriman, and Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Thomas, announced the construction of a new Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) home in Prince Albert.

Located at 1870-13th Street West, the Habitat home will be a three-bedroom bungalow totalling approximately 1,350 feet or 125 square metres.

“Our government is dedicated to working in partnership with organizations like Habitat for Humanity to build the sort of safe and affordable housing necessary for healthy, sustainable communities in Saskatchewan, and across the country,” said Goodale.  “Investments in new homes like this will make a real difference in the lives of a deserving family in Prince Albert – a place they can proudly call their own.”

“Our government is pleased to support another Habitat for Humanity build in Prince Albert,” Hargrave said.  “Providing families with a safe, stable and affordable home is a life-changing opportunity, and enables Habitat to continue their mission to build affordable homes for vulnerable families throughout the province.  We are honoured to work with Habitat for Humanity and the Government of Canada as we work together to serve the people of Saskatchewan.”

“Prince Albert Habitat is very happy to announce another CORCAN construction build partnership,” Thomas said.  “This single level house was built with funds graciously donated by our Government of Saskatchewan and CMHC.  The home will be moved to its final location at 1870-13th Street West later this summer and house a well deserving family before Christmas.  We are extremely grateful for another year of commitment from our partners.  This continued support allows us to serve more families in our future, giving thousands in social return to our local economy.”

Quick facts:
  • The Government of Canada, through CMHC, and the Government of Saskatchewan, through SHC, are jointly contributing $65,000 to build the home through the 2014-2019 Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement.
  • This build is a partnership between CORCAN and Habitat.  CORCAN, a special operating agency of Correctional Service Canada, works with inmates through the certified vocational training programs where inmates build houses while acquiring skills for the home construction industry.
  • The Government of Canada is currently rolling out its National Housing Strategy, an ambitious 10-year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need, as well as repair and renew more than 300,000 housing units and reduce chronic homelessness by 50 per cent.
  • Thanks to new investments proposed in Budget 2019, Canada’s National Housing Strategy will be a 10-year, $55 billion plan that will give more Canadians a place to call home.
  • The province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity totals $10.85 million since March 2009.  This total includes funding of $600,000 from the provincial Summit Action Fund.
  • Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home or other Habitat homes.  To learn more about Habitat for Humanity and their work across Saskatchewan, visit www.habitat.ca
