The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed May 7 as Correctional Officer Appreciation Day.This day recognizes the contributions of correctional officers, facility youth workers and probation officers who bring skill and professionalism to their job.
“Our government extends our sincere appreciation and gratitude to each and every correctional employee in our province,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said. “These hardworking men and women help keep our communities safe, while working to rehabilitate offenders and decrease recidivism, helping to enhance public safety in each of our communities.”
In addition, beginning next Correctional Officer Appreciation Day, there will be an inaugural presentation of the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Custody and Community Services.
“Correctional officers, facility youth workers, and probation officers can work in challenging environments, some of whom do so each and every day,” Tell said. “Acknowledging these employees who demonstrate a high level of excellence is one way in which we can recognize their service on behalf of the people of Saskatchewan.”
There are approximately 2,200 correctional officers, facility youth workers and probation officers across Saskatchewan.
Tell will introduce officers in the assembly to mark Correctional Officer Appreciation Day. In addition, each correctional facility or Community Corrections office will hold an appreciation event for staff.
