The Ministry of Corrections and Policing is providing $2.2 million for policing initiatives in Prince Albert through the Municipal Police Grants.
The grant will fund 20 existing Prince Albert Police Service positions in 2019-2020.
“This funding will help ensure community safety in Prince Albert,” Crown Investments Minister and Prince Albert Carlton MLA Joe Hargrave said on behalf of Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell. “We’re proud to be able to support the Prince Albert Police Service in the work it does every day in protecting citizens.”
The funding for Prince Albert supports enhanced community policing programs and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, which responds to the problem of gang activity. It also supports the Missing Persons Task Force.
“The Municipal Policing Grants allows the Prince Albert Police Service to focus resources to proactively address public safety and ensure that best policing is achieved in both provincial and local public safety priorities,” Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne said. “We are fortunate to receive such policing grants partnerships to reduce and respond to complex challenges in our community and make our community more safe.”
“Prince Albert police officers routinely partner with other law enforcement and community agencies to combat and prevent crime and illegal activity,” Prince Albert Police Chief Jonathan Bergen said. “Municipal Police Grants allow us to do more to proactively address threats to public safety as we work toward the shared goal of reducing crime. These grants enhance resources to police agencies so that we partner on important initiatives in a timely manner to help protect our communities.”
Saskatchewan Government Insurance has also provided $540,000 for an additional three police officers in Prince Albert as part of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan initiative.
This brings the total of the Prince Albert Police Service Funding Agreement to $2.7 million for 2019-20.
