The Ministry of Corrections and Policing is providing $4.86 million for policing initiatives in Regina through the Municipal Police Grants program.The grant will fund 40 existing Regina Police Service positions in 2019-2020.
“Protecting residents is a collaborative effort,” Minister of Corrections and Policing Christine Tell said. “We are proud to able to support the Regina police service and the work it does to ensure community safety.”
The funding for Regina supports enhanced community policing programs and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, which responds to the problem of gang activity. It also supports the Internet Child Exploitation unit, which works to reduce the victimization of the most vulnerable members of our society.
“Public safety is a top priority for our residents, particularly as we deal with an increase in drug and weapons offences,” Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said. “The province’s continued support in maintaining these positions helps us ensure Regina is a safe community and furthers our work to find the most strategic, efficient ways to serve and protect our residents.”
“The Regina Police Service greatly appreciates the Province of Saskatchewan's municipal police grant.” Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said. “The province's continued financial commitment towards policing in Regina makes a substantial impact on our ability to enhance community safety and wellness.”
Saskatchewan Government Insurance is also providing $900,000 for five positions as part of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan initiative.
This brings the total of the Regina Police Service Funding Agreement to $5.76 million for 2019-20.
