North East Provincial Parks Investment

Released on September 5, 2018

The Government of Saskatchewan is investing more than $300,000 in provincial parks in the North East region in 2018-19 for facility and infrastructure improvements.

This year, more than $11 million will be invested across Saskatchewan’s provincial parks system.  Over the last decade, the government has invested nearly $110 million to improve and expand the parks.  The provincial parks continue to be popular camping and recreational destinations, attracting in- and out-of-province visitors.

“The parks in this region are known for their natural beauty, unique camping and excellent hiking trails,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said.  “Over the past five years, many upgrades have been made to enhance the experience for campers.  Additional investments this year will allow the parks to continue to provide the best experience for park visitors.”

Upgrades scheduled for completion prior to the 2019 camping season in the North East region include:

  • Trail improvements at Candle Lake Provincial Park;
  • New maintenance equipment that will improve trail maintenance and grooming throughout the year at Lac La Ronge and Great Blue Heron Provincial Parks;
  • A new equipment storage building at Narrow Hills Provincial Park; and
  • Additional improvements to campsites, picnic tables, barbecues, washrooms, and other facilities, infrastructure and equipment throughout the North East region.
Over the past five years, more than $6 million of improvements have been made to this region, including:
  • Campground electrical expansion, boat launch upgrades and a new playground structure at Candle Lake Provincial Park;
  • Campground electrical expansion and upgrades, boat launch improvements and park road upgrades at Great Blue Heron Provincial Park;
  • Restoration to the exterior of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church and campground electrical expansion and upgrades at Lac La Ronge Provincial Park; and
  • A new visitor reception centre with new interpretive displays, service centre replacement and electrical upgrades and expansion at Narrow Hills Provincial Park.
Planned improvements for 2018-19 throughout the park system will increase total investment in parks to nearly $110 million since 2008.  Saskatchewan’s provincial parks continue to be an important destination, attracting visitors and bringing economic benefits to the entire province.
