The Government of Saskatchewan is helping to keep Prince Albert safe with funding through Municipal Police Grants.
The Ministry of Corrections and Policing is providing $2.2 million to fund 20 existing Prince Albert Police Service positions in 2018-19. Four of these positions are assigned to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, whose mandate is to dismantle and disrupt criminal organizations by conducting criminal investigations of organized crime, serious crime and gang-related activities in Saskatchewan.
“Keeping communities safe is a top priority of this government,” Crown Investments Minister and Prince Albert Carlton MLA Joe Hargrave said on behalf of Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell. “Support for policing initiatives in Prince Albert is essential for public safety.”
The Ministry of Corrections and Policing provides funds to urban police services across Saskatchewan to support 128 municipal police positions and policing initiatives.
In Prince Albert, the Municipal Police Grants support work to solve missing persons cases and to reduce the victimization of the most vulnerable members of our society through the work of the Child Sexual Exploitation Program and the Internet Child Exploitation unit.
“The Municipal Police Grants support and fund focused resources that ensure best policing is achieved in both provincial and local public safety priorities,” Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne said. “The policing grant partnerships ensure we can reduce and respond to complex challenges within our community.”
“The challenges facing policing do not have borders and require a response locally and provincially,” Prince Albert Police Service Acting Chief Jon Bergen said. “The Provincial Municipal Police Grants allows us to do more to maximize on our commitment to our community of public safety and is a partnership that supports the municipality in the common goal of reducing crime. The grants support common policing goals both locally and regionally which creates a safer Saskatchewan.”
Saskatchewan Government Insurance has also provided $540,000 for an additional three police officers in Prince Albert as part of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan initiative.
This brings the total of the Prince Albert Police Service Funding Agreement to $2.7 million for 2018-19.
