The Government of Saskatchewan is helping to keep communities and families in Regina safe through the Municipal Police Grants.
The Ministry of Corrections and Policing’s contribution of $4.86 million will fund 40 existing Regina Police Service positions in 2018-19.
“Public safety is a top priority for our government,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said. “We know that this funding and support is important for communities to help protect citizens.”
The Ministry of Corrections and Policing provides funds for 128 municipal police positions and policing initiatives across the province.
The funding for Regina supports policing programs that focus on organized crime and gang activity, as well as work to solve missing persons cases. It also aids the Internet Child Exploitation unit, which works to reduce the victimization of the most vulnerable members of our society.
“Our residents have told us that public safety is vitally important, and the Regina Police Service is dedicated to finding the most strategic, efficient ways to serve and protect our residents,” Regina Mayor and Board of Police Commissioners Chair Michael Fougere said. “The province’s continued support to maintaining these positions helps us ensure Regina is a safe community.”
“The Regina Police Service is very appreciative of the municipal grant received from the province of Saskatchewan,” Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said. “This investment in community safety benefits all citizens of Regina. The ongoing collaboration and financial assistance between the province and our police service is symbolic of a strong commitment toward ensuring a safe and healthy community.”
Saskatchewan Government Insurance has also provided $900,000 for five positions as part of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan initiative.
This brings the total of the Regina Police Service Funding Agreement to $5.76 million for 2018-19.
