The athletes, coaches and official who represented their Saskatchewan roots at the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic games were recognized by the Government of Saskatchewan, Sask Sport Inc. and the Canadian Sport Centre, at the Legislative Building today.
Saskatchewan’s athletes and coaches held their weight with four medals contributing to the count: Emily Clark (Saskatoon) and Brigette Lacquette (Cote First Nation) competed in Women's Hockey winning silver. Linden Vey (Wakaw), Willie Desjardins (Climax), Head Coach, and Dave King (Saskatoon), Assistant Coach, earned a bronze medal in Men's Hockey, and snowboarder Mark McMorris (Regina) along with his coach Adam Burwell (Regina) brought home bronze in Men’s Slopestyle.
Team Canada won 28 medals at the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympics, beating the previous record of 19 medals at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Again, Saskatchewan athletes and coaches made their mark. Brittany Hudak (Prince Albert) won bronze in the Para Nordic event and Kurt Oatway (Regina) won gold in Para Alpine. Ken Babey (Saskatoon), Head Coach of Para Ice Hockey, led the team to silver and Marie Wright (Moose Jaw) along with Head Coach Wayne Kiel (Balgonie) won bronze in Wheelchair Curling.
“On behalf of Sask Sport Inc.’s Board of Directors and the amateur sport community, I extend our congratulations to the athletes, coaches and officials who participated in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” Sask Sport Inc. Chair Darren Wilcox said. “We are #SaskProud of your achievements and the inspiration that you are to us all, as you exemplify that sport is more than a game.”
While in Regina, some of the athletes and coaches will also visit Dream Brokers schools to meet with students.
