Yorkton Family Receives Habitat for Humanity Home with Support from Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan

Released on May 18, 2018

The Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan, and Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) have partnered to help a Yorkton family realize their dream of home ownership.

Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Rural and Remote Health Minister and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Yorkton Greg Ottenbreit, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) Paul Merriman, made the announcement today.

“We are dedicated to working in partnership with organizations like Habitat to build housing that is safe and affordable, which is the cornerstone of healthy, sustainable communities,” said Duclos.  “The beautiful new home here is the start of something very special for this young family—it sets them firmly on the path to greater prosperity and that’s something our government is proud to be part of.”

“Our government is pleased to work with both our federal and non-profit partners to help this family achieve their goal of home ownership,” Ottenbreit said.  “Habitat for Humanity has a rich history of helping families achieve their home ownership dreams, and we support their important work across the province.   Thank you to everyone for their involvement in this project.”

“Today is a day that this family and Habitat staff, supporters, and volunteers have been looking forward to since construction began on their home in May of 2017,” Habitat for Humanity Regina Chief Executive Officer Kelly Holmes-Binns said.  “Habitat for Humanity exists to bring opportunity for affordable homeownership to hardworking, low-income families.  This family will create wonderful memories here and we are proud to stand among our partners and the many individuals who contributed, to welcome them home.”

Quick facts:
  • The Government of Canada, through CMHC, along with the Government of Saskatchewan, through SHC, jointly contributed $50,000 to build the home through the federal/provincial Social Infrastructure Fund.
  • This home was also built in partnership with labour support from the Construction Worker Preparation Program at the White Spruce Provincial Training Centre.  The 12-week program provides participants with 400 hours toward a Journeyman Certificate, and the opportunity to gain real-life vocational skills in a construction environment.
  • This Habitat for Humanity home, located at 222 Betts Avenue, is a 1,008 ft2 (94 m2) raised.
  • The province’s overall commitment to Habitat for Humanity totals $10.85 million since March 2009.  Of this amount, the federal and provincial governments have invested $3 million, thanks to the federal/provincial Social Infrastructure Fund to build additional affordable homes in various communities around Saskatchewan.
  • This investment supports Saskatchewan’s Housing Strategy and Poverty Reduction Strategy by ensuring Saskatchewan people in greatest need have access to affordable, safe, secure and stable housing.
  • Habitat for Humanity’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home or other Habitat homes.  To learn more about Habitat for Humanity and their work across Saskatchewan, visit www.habitat.ca.
