Construction Begins for a New Affordable Housing Project in Regina

Released on May 17, 2018

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, along with the City of Regina and Silver Sage Holdings Ltd., officially announced funding for the construction of a six-unit rental housing project including support services for hard-to-house families.

Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with Regina Walsh Acres MLA Warren Steinley on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) Paul Merriman, City of Regina Mayor Michael Fougere, and Silver Sage Board Chair Edmund Bellegarde, made the announcement today.

“This project is primarily designed with one goal—to help lift families out of poverty,” Goodale said.  “When we help low-income households access the housing they need, we are doing more than putting a roof over their heads.  Along with much needed support services, we are helping build a foundation for broader social and economic success for these families.”

“We are here today thanks to the vision and commitment of Silver Sage Holdings Ltd. as they work to help improve the lives of Saskatchewan families,” Steinley said.  “Our government shares this goal, and we are pleased to support this project and, most importantly, the six families who will reside in these homes with the supports they require.  We congratulate everyone involved with making this important project happen, and for supporting those in greatest housing need.”

“It is an honour for the City of Regina to once again offer its support to Silver Sage Holdings Ltd. as it begins work on this latest project,” Fougere said.  “With the opening of its brand new development on Dewdney Avenue in November, we see a local developer demonstrating their commitment to providing robust access to families who are in need of affordable, supportive, quality housing.”

“Many of our residents need stable housing to succeed, and we seek to improve their access to opportunity,” Bellegarde said.   “Through our continued building of capacity, we have been able to enter into these funding partnerships and help families in our community to heal and to live in safety and comfort as they begin to move forward with their lives.”

Quick Facts:

  • This project will provide permanent housing for hard-to-house families.  The homes will be located on two lots in close proximity, 1346 Forget Street and 5029 - 7th Avenue.  The project consists of the construction of six three-bedroom duplexes, each averaging 1,198 square feet.
  • The federal and provincial governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing $900,100 toward the six units under the Canada-Saskatchewan 2016-2018 Social Infrastructure Fund Allocation Increase.
  • An additional $150,000 in funding will be provided by the City of Regina.
  • Silver Sage Holdings Ltd. will contribute approximately $1 million in the form of cash/land equity and mortgage financing.
  • This investment supports the Saskatchewan Housing Strategy and Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have affordable, safe, secure and stable housing, including those who are hard-to-house.
  • It also supports the Province’s Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan goal to increase community capacity to support people living with persistent and complex mental health and addictions issues, including housing and intensive team-based supports.
