Today, the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure placed 24 projects worth an estimated $65 million for tender to improve highway safety in Saskatchewan.“Safety is the most important priority on our provincial highway system,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said. “We are pleased with this year’s spring tender plan and the continuation of passing lane expansion throughout the province.”
Safety is the focus of the highway improvement projects released in the Government of Saskatchewan’s 2018 Spring Tender Schedule.
Projects to construct passing lanes on Highway 4 between North Battleford and Cochin, and Highway 6 between the junction of Highway 39 and the Rowatt Access, as well as the twinning of Highway 7 around the Village of Vanscoy, point to the focus on safety.
The projects include about 70 km in grading and paving, 225 km of maintenance work (seal coating, rut filling and patching), nine bridge replacements or rehabilitations, and two culvert installations.
The 2018 Spring Tender Schedule expands on previous work announced last fall. Combined with the tenders released in September 2017, there are more than 130 highway improvement projects in progress in Saskatchewan, with a value exceeding $285 million.
Tender advertising is currently underway for these projects. Start dates for the projects depend on when the tender is awarded, contractor availability and weather.
With this year’s $924 million budget, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $3 billion into highways and infrastructure over the last three years.
