The Government of Saskatchewan is investing over $11 million in facility and infrastructure improvements throughout provincial parks in 2018-19, including nearly $3.6 million for parks in the province’s North West.
“Our facilities and infrastructure are an important part of our visitor’s overall park experience,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “In the North West region, the improvements being made will help ensure park safety, increase accessibility and convenience, while continuing to make our parks enjoyable places for families.”
Several upgrades are scheduled for completion at the Meadow Lake Provincial Park prior to the 2019 camping season, including:
- Two new service centres and major road improvements at Kimball Lake and Greig Lake campgrounds;
- Boat launch improvements and a parking lot expansion at the Greig Lake boat launch and roof repairs at the Greig Lake interpretive centre;
- Electrical upgrades and an expansion at the Murray Doell Campground; and
- Major upgrades to the wastewater system at Kimball Campground.
In addition, construction of a new water treatment plant at the Battlefords Provincial Park is scheduled for completion in 2019. A new digital messaging sign has also been installed in this area to communicate important information to park visitors.
The $3.6 million is in addition to over $6.7 million invested in parks in the North West over the past five years for improvements including:
- New and upgraded electric and full services campsites;
- Major road upgrades;
- Improvements to a parking lot and boat launches; and
- New service centres.
Planned improvements for 2018-19 throughout the park system will increase total investment in parks to nearly $110 million since 2008. Saskatchewan’s provincial parks continue to be an important destination, attracting visitors and bringing economic benefits to the entire province.
