Light of the Prairies Receives New Capital Funding from Province

Saskatoon University MLA Eric Olauson, on behalf of Social Services Minister Paul Merriman, today announced $16,000 in new capital funding to Light of the Prairies, a community-based organization that supports people experiencing disabilities.

“It is important that the community-based organizations supporting those experiencing disabilities have the facilities they need,” Olauson said.  “This funding will allow Light of the Prairies to improve their entrance accessibility to better support the inclusion of their program participants.”

Light of the Prairies has been delivering supports and services for people experiencing intellectual disabilities since 1988.  Light of the Prairies operates five group homes and provides a day program for 32 people in Saskatoon.  This new capital funding will go toward adding a concrete pad to the parking lot to improve day program accessibility.

“We greatly appreciate the investment the province has made in helping to make Saskatchewan the greatest place for people experiencing disabilities to live,” Light of the Prairies Executive Director Kevin Martens said.  “This investment will allow individuals safer and more accessible access to our day program, removing barriers and fostering inclusion.”

The Saskatchewan Disability Strategy was released by the Citizen Consultation Team in June 2015.  Government accepted the Strategy and is focused on the foundational work of six priority areas including: transportation, respite, accessibility legislation, residential services, service co-ordination and navigation, and awareness/understanding of the rights of people experiencing disabilities.

Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work which aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
