Today Education Minister Bronwyn Eyre joined students, teachers, dignitaries and representatives from Regina Public Schools to celebrate the grand opening of Plainsview School in Rosewood Park.
“Our government congratulates the people of northwest Regina on opening Plainsview School, which was needed for the future of this fast-growing area of the city,” Eyre said. “Students, teachers, families and the entire neighbourhood will benefit greatly from this project for years to come.”
“As northwest Regina grows its borders, Regina Public schools, working with the Government of Saskatchewan and Regina Catholic Schools collaborated to meet the growing educational needs of students and the community,” Regina Public Schools' Board Chair Katherine Gagne said. “We are proud to be adding Plainsview School to the educational landscape and providing our school families learning opportunities in a new school building.”
Plainsview School is a K-8 school that can accommodate up to 650 students at full design capacity.
“These are amazing school buildings,” Plainsview School Principal Curtis Seifert said. “It was great to see the looks of the students’ faces when they saw their new classrooms and learning spaces for the first time. It was worth all the work that went into building and opening the school.”
Plainsview School shares space with St. Nicholas School as part of the Joint-Use Schools Project, which includes 18 new elementary schools at nine locations throughout the province, all co-owned between Catholic and public schools. Each joint-use school also contains a 90-space child care centre as well as community space.
There were 73 Saskatchewan companies involved in the construction of the 18 schools, accounting for 75 per cent of the entire construction team. In all, approximately 2,300 construction jobs were created.
Since 2007, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $1.5 billion toward 67 major school capital projects and numerous smaller projects such as portable classrooms and preventative maintenance and renewal.
