Palliser Painting from Provincial Archives Travels to Ireland for Exhibition

Released on October 23, 2017

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan is pleased to announce that a portrait from its collection will be part of an exhibition launched at the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin this week.

The portrait of Mary Palliser (1834-1879), by Victorian-era Irish watercolour artist and museum director Sir Frederic William Burton (1816-1900), will be on display at the Beit Wing of the Gallery from October 25, 2017, to January 14, 2018, in the exhibition Frederic William Burton: For the Love of Art.  The exhibition showcases more than 70 works by Burton, as well as works by those who influenced his art.

“The Provincial Archives is thrilled to have this portrait travel to Ireland as part of the Burton exhibition,” Provincial Archivist Linda McIntyre said.  “The Irish public will be provided with a unique opportunity to view the painting linked to one of Ireland’s distinguished families.”

The Palliser portrait has not been viewed publicly since it was borrowed from a private collection for a 1900 exhibition of Burton’s works.

”It is an honour to have a painting with a Saskatchewan connection be part of such a prestigious international exhibition,” Minister Responsible for the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan Christine Tell said.  “The Mary Palliser painting is just one of the many pieces of our history under the care of the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan.”

For information on the Burton exhibition read the National Gallery’s press release at https://www.nationalgallery.ie/press-release-1892017.
