A Habitat for Humanity partner family became first-time homeowners today after receiving a key to their new house at a dedication ceremony held in Nipawin. This opportunity was made possible through $65,000 in funding support from the province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, and land provided by the Town of Nipawin.
The build was undertaken by the Nipawin chapter of Habitat for Humanity, with assistance from other community partners and volunteers.
“Our government shares Habitat for Humanity’s goal to assist families who thought homeownership was out of their reach,” Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Paul Merriman. “Because of Habitat, its partners and volunteer support, these families can create positive, lasting change by building or improving a place they can call home. Habitat’s mission aligns well with our goal of helping families to achieve strength, stability and independence through safe, quality housing and keeping Saskatchewan strong.”
“Habitat for Humanity is proud to be able to provide another home to another family in Nipawin,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director John van Leeuwen said. “Our team here in Nipawin has worked hard to make this home a reality, and today we can celebrate the achievements of a community coming together to provide a home for a local family. We know that this home will be a catalyst for growth and we look forward to being able to witness the changes a stable home will provide for another Saskatchewan family.”
Located at 106 - 5th Street North, the Habitat home is a four-bedroom bungalow approximately 1,000 square feet or 93 square metres across the main floor, with a partially completed basement.
Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested $9.85 million in Saskatchewan low- to moderate-income families across the province in 13 communities: the Battleford region, Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.
Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals. A key component to Habitat’s model is the “Revolving Build Fund” (Build Fund).
Provincial funding, community donations, and private funds are deposited in the Build Fund and used to construct homes. Upon completion, an affordable no-interest mortgage is provided by Habitat to partner families with mortgage payments going back into the Build Fund for future builds.
Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
Habitat is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe place to live. The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income families with access to affordable homeownership.
