New Group Home Re-Opens in Wadena

Released on October 17, 2017

Kelvington-Wadena MLA Hugh Nerlien on behalf of Social Services Minister Paul Merriman, joined community members, dignitaries, future residents and their loved ones to celebrate the grand opening of a new group home in Wadena.  The previous group home, operated by Mallard Diversified Services Inc. (MDSI), was hit by lightning in 2015 and lost in a fire.

“Today is a happy day for the individuals living here as they get to return to a permanent home and start a new beginning,” Nerlien said.  “Mallard Diversified Services continues to do remarkable work supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in Saskatchewan.  The Government of Saskatchewan appreciates the supports community-based organizations provide to create more inclusive communities.”

MDSI provides training opportunities, employment and residential options for adults with intellectual disabilities.

Along with their enterprises, MDSI owns and operates two other group homes and a supportive living program.  This group home will support six individuals, five of which were displaced by the fire.  The government provided funding for this home in the form of a mortgage up to $869,945.

“It is a very emotional day for all of us at MDSI,” Mallard Diversified Services Executive Director Ryan Calder said.  “On behalf of the residents, their families, the staff and the board, we want to thank the provincial government for stepping forward and assisting us in turning a catastrophe into a new beginning, a new home that we will be able to enjoy for many years to come.”

The Saskatchewan Disability Strategy was released by the Citizen Consultation Team in June 2015.  Government accepted the Strategy and is focused on the foundational work of six priority areas including: transportation, respite, accessibility legislation, residential services, service co-ordination and navigation, and awareness/understanding of the rights of people experiencing disabilities.

Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work which aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability.
