Every Second Counts – Plan Two Ways Out!

“A fire can become life-threatening in less than two minutes,” Doke said.  “That is why it is important to plan two ways out of your home, so you can still leave quickly in the event one route is blocked.  Properly maintained and installed smoke alarms are also important since they can alert you and your family to leave immediately before the fire spreads.”

Emergency Management and Fire Safety Branch Commissioner Duane McKay and Regina Fire Chief Layne Jackson also attended the event to educate the students about the importance of smoke alarms in the home.

“Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home, including inside and outside of each bedroom and sleeping area,” McKay said.  “A smoke alarm can only help you if it works.  Check your smoke alarm using the test button at least once a month or as recommended by the manufacturer.”

Regina Fire Chief Layne Jackson stressed the importance of replacing older smoke alarms.

“The date your smoke alarm was manufactured should be on the back of the alarm,” Chief Jackson said.  “Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years or earlier if they are not working properly.”

The students from St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School also enjoyed a fire truck demonstration conducted by members from Regina Fire and Protective Services.
