Animal Health Week Proclaimed for October 1 to 7

Released on October 2, 2017

Today, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart proclaimed October 1 to 7 as Animal Health Week in Saskatchewan.

This year’s national theme is, “Animal Welfare: Safeguarding the Five Animal Freedoms.”

“Saskatchewan’s livestock producers are dedicated to ensuring the health and welfare of their animals,” Stewart said. “They take great pride in using animal care practices that keep their livestock healthy and stress-free.”

The Five Animal Freedoms are:
  • Proper nutrition;
  • Proper socialization;
  • Adequate shelter;
  • Appropriate veterinary care; and
  • Ability to exhibit normal behaviour.

Saskatchewan’s Animal Health Week coincides with Animal Health Week in Canada, as proclaimed by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.  Veterinarians use the week as an opportunity to talk to the public about animal health and welfare.

“Livestock producers play a significant role in protecting the health and welfare of our animals, particularly when it comes to the Five Animal Freedoms,” Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association Council Past President Charlotte Williams said.  “Animal Health Week gives us a chance to highlight that, as well as discuss important measures such as vaccinations and biosecurity.”
