Released on November 22, 2017
A Saskatoon company was found guilty of violating occupational health and safety regulations for not ensuring equipment was being used safely.
Little Rainbow Roofing & Exteriors Inc. was found guilty of contravening clause 253(2)(b) of the regulations (being an employer failed to ensure that a portable ladder is secured against accidental movement during use).
The company was fined $1,000 plus a $400 surcharge in Saskatoon Provincial Court on November 14, 2017. Two other charges were stayed.
Charges were laid after an Occupational Health Officer observed workers not using fall protection or personal protective equipment at a worksite near Saskatoon on June 23, 2016. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Falls are one of the most common injury-causing hazards in the construction industry according to WorkSafe Saskatchewan. Workers should always be outfitted with safety gear appropriate for the job they are doing. Equipment should be inspected daily, and any worn or damaged equipment should be replaced.
