Advanced Education Minister Herb Cox recognized 22 new recipients of the Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour at the Saskatchewan Legislature today.
The scholarship recognizes returning Canadian Armed Forces Members as well as the spouses and children of injured or fallen members. The scholarship provides a one-time award of $5,000 toward post-secondary education.
“Our government admires the dedication and courage of the many men and women serving in Canada’s Armed Forces,” Cox said. “This scholarship will help them pursue their post-secondary studies and is a token of our gratitude and respect for their bravery. It is because of their service that we live in a country where freedom and peace are preserved.”
Since the scholarship was started in 2009, 183 scholarships have been awarded, totalling $915,000. Nineteen of these recipients are family members of injured or fallen Canadian Armed Forces Members. Eligible candidates must be current or former Saskatchewan residents. They must be returning service men and women who actively served in designated military operations in the Canadian Armed Forces (regular or reserves) after January 2001.
The spouse and/or child of permanently disabled or deceased individuals who served in designated military operations after January 2001 may also be eligible. All candidates must be enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.
The Ministry of Advanced Education works with the federal government to distribute scholarship information to returning soldiers and their families.
