Released on November 3, 2017
A Prince Albert company was found guilty of three violations of occupational health and safety regulations in Prince Albert Provincial Court on October 25, 2017.
Pro Image Roofing and Gutters Ltd. was fined a total of $6,880 for:
- contravening subsection 116(2) of the regulations (being an employer, failed to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a temporary or permanent work area where a worker may fall three metres or more);
- contravening subsection 91(1) of the regulations (being an employer, where there is risk of injury to the head of a worker, failed to provide approved industrial protective headwear and require a worker to use it); and
- contravening clause 253(2)(d) of the regulations (being an employer, failed to ensure that a portable ladder extends at least one metre above any platform, roof or other landing to which the ladder is used as a means of access).
The fines include $5,000 in total charges on all three counts, plus a total surcharge of $1,880. The company was found not guilty on one other count.
Charges were laid after an Occupational Health Officer observed workers not using fall protection or personal protective equipment at a worksite near Emma Lake, Saskatchewan on January 27, 2016. Fortunately no workers were injured.
Falls from heights can cause serious injuries and are easy to prevent. To learn more about fall prevention, business owners and employees are encouraged to contact WorkSafe Saskatchewan or their industry safety association for recommendations on equipment and training.
