Representatives from all aspects of the petroleum industry, including geologists, engineers, senior oil company executives and service companies, are in Regina this week for one of North America’s preeminent oil and gas trade shows and networking events. This year is Regina’s turn to host the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference, which swaps locations in Saskatchewan and North Dakota on alternating years and is co-hosted by the Government of Saskatchewan, the state government of North Dakota, the North Dakota Petroleum Council and the Petroleum Technology Research Council.
The three-day event showcases the Williston Basin, a major oil-producing region extending into southern Saskatchewan, North and South Dakota, Montana and Manitoba and which represents billions of dollars in shared investment and economic activity between the various jurisdictions.
“This is the 25th year for the conference, representing a quarter-century of acknowledgement of the importance of this resource we collectively access and manage with our state and provincial neighbours,” Energy and Resources Minister Dustin Duncan said. “The Williston Basin is a significant economic engine for Saskatchewan and is a major part of what drives the competitiveness and innovation of some of our most dynamic companies and people.”
The formal agenda for the 2017 conference begins today and includes talks on production optimization, geology, and regulatory and environmental issues, as well as geologic information about key plays within the Williston Basin.
Participating exhibitors will also conduct presentations on the potential applications of new technology within the petroleum industry.
Saskatchewan is Canada’s second-biggest oil producer, with 459,600 barrels of oil per day produced on average in 2016, of which 65 to 70 per cent was exported to the United States.
