Legislative Dome Receives North American Copper Award

Released on May 2, 2017

The restoration of the dome of the Legislative building received international acclaim for its excellence in copper craftsmanship.  The project was chosen by a panel of industry experts to receive a North American Copper in Architecture Award which was awarded on April 27.

“The work here stands shoulder to shoulder with the most highly regarded copper architecture projects across North America,” Central Services Minister Christine Tell said.  “The beautifully restored dome of our province’s Legislative building is a fitting match for the strength and ingenuity of the people who call Saskatchewan home.”

Now in its 10th year, the North American Copper in Architecture Awards recognize and promote North American building projects for their outstanding use of architectural copper and copper alloys.  Projects are selected across three different categories – New Construction, Renovation/Restoration and Ornamental Applications.  The annual awards program showcases a wide range of projects, both residential and commercial, which highlight craftsmanship, attention to detail and architectural vision.

The awards are presented by the Canadian Copper and Brass Development Association (CCBDA) and its American counterpart, the Copper Development Association Inc.

“We are pleased to recognize the fine work that went into the Saskatchewan Legislative building’s dome,” CCBDA Executive Director Stephen A.W. Knapp said.  “It is an outstanding Canadian restoration effort and joins the many other notable copper installations we have recognized since 2008 to promote copper’s great natural beauty, exceptional service life, and unsurpassed performance.”

The restoration of the dome was needed to preserve the Legislative building and ensure its structural safety.  Hundreds of skilled tradespeople including specialized roofers, carpenters and copper restoration experts worked to restore or replace the entire copper dome roof system which had deteriorated over time due to exposure to the elements.  The project used tens of thousands of pounds of new copper on the roof and repaired or replaced a variety of copper garland and other ornamental trim.

PCL Construction Management, who carried out the construction, and subcontractor Empire Restoration nominated the dome project for the award.
