The restored dome of Saskatchewan’s Legislative building was recognized as a shining example of heritage conservation in the province’s capital city on Monday, March 27.
Completed last summer, the significant restoration project was awarded the 2017 Municipal Heritage Award for Restoration by the City of Regina. The Ministry of Central Services’ Legislative Building project team received the award at a presentation ceremony during the Regina City Council meeting.
Each year, the Municipal Heritage Award is presented to those who have demonstrated commitment to conserve the city’s built heritage and history. The Legislative dome restoration project is being recognized for restoring this landmark to its original 1912 state, while protecting its heritage value.
“It is our responsibility to protect heritage buildings for current and future generations alike,” Central Services Minister Christine Tell said. “The Legislative Building is not only part of our collective identity, it is our province’s most iconic symbol of democracy.”
In addition to outfitting the dome in reflective, new copper, the work included repairs and replacement of the dome’s limestone, mortar, and water management system which had deteriorated over time due to exposure to the elements. The repairs were needed to preserve the building and ensure its structural safety for visitors and those who work in the building.
“We were proud to nominate the dome project for the award,” PCL Construction Management District Manager Sean Hamelin said. “We approached the restoration with the same care and craftsmanship that went into creating the building more than 100 years ago. It was an honour to be part of this momentous undertaking.”
The work was carried out in compliance with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada and The Heritage Property Act.
