Saskatoon Company Fined for Occupational Health and Safety Violations

Released on January 23, 2017

L & M Wood Products (2011) Ltd. has been fined a total of $45,500 for violating one count under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation.

The company pleaded guilty on January 17, 2017 to contravening subsection 137(1) of the regulations (being an employer, fail to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine, resulting in a serious injury to a worker).

They were fined $32,500 with a $13,000 surcharge. The incident occurred on February 10, 2015 near Glaslyn when an employee was cleaning a piece of machinery. The worker’s arm became entangled in a sprocket which resulted in a serious injury. While everyone is responsible to create and maintain a safe and healthy workplace, employers carry the greatest responsibility because of their authority and control over the worksite.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety works to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses through education, inspections, and prosecutions. For more information about OHS prosecutions please visit www.saskatchewan.ca/business/safety-in-the-workplace.
