Company Fined for Not Ensuring Employee Had Proper Safety Training

Released on April 28, 2017

A Winnipeg, Manitoba company pleaded guilty to one charge under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and was fined nearly $40,000 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on April 25.

Nu-Fab Building pleaded guilty to contravening subsection 19(1) of the regulations (being an employer at a place of employment failed to ensure that a worker is trained in all matters that are necessary to protect the health and safety of the worker when the worker begins work at a place of employment, resulting in a serious injury to a worker).

The company was fined $28,000 plus a surcharge of $11,200 for a total of $39,200.  One additional charge was stayed.

Charges stem from an incident that occurred on December 7, 2015.  A worker sustained a serious leg injury when trusses fell off a trailer.

Employers are responsible for ensuring workers receive proper training when they are hired, when their duties change, or when new equipment is introduced in a workplace.

WorkSafe Saskatchewan can provide a list of Saskatchewan Safety Associations and other businesses and organizations that offer training.  For more information, visit www.worksafesask.ca.
