Company Fined for Safety Violation

Released on September 22, 2016

A company from the Rural Municipality of Corman Park #344, has been fined $35,000 for violating one count under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation.

Venture Construction Inc. pleaded guilty to contravening subsection 465(2) of the regulations (failure to ensure that no worker works and no equipment or powered mobile equipment is used or operated within the minimum distance from any exposed energized electrical conductor) in Saskatoon Provincial Court on September 20, 2016.  An additional charge was stayed.

Charges stem from an incident that occurred near Peerless, on July 14, 2014.  A trailer was being raised and came into contact with a power line, resulting in a worker being electrocuted and seriously injured.

OHS regulations set out minimum distances that equipment must be kept from electrical conductors such as overhead power lines.  Those standards can be found in Table 22 of the Appendix to The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 at www.qp.gov.sk.ca/documents/English/Regulations/Regulations/O1-1R1.pdf.
