A family in central Saskatchewan is closer to realizing the dream of home ownership, following a funding announcement in Duck Lake today. The Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) have partnered to support the construction of a new three-bedroom bungalow in the Town of Duck Lake, about 90 kilometres north of Saskatoon.Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Batoche MLA Delbert Kirsch, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) Tina Beaudry-Mellor, and Habitat for Humanity, Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Adamson, made the announcement today.
“Our government remains committed to making significant investments in affordable housing, strengthening Canadian communities, creating jobs and growing the middle class and those fighting hard to join it,” said Duclos. “With our partners, we are providing an affordable and better place for families to live, and building a strong foundation for our economic future. Congratulations to Habitat for Humanity, the family, and everyone involved.”

“We are very excited about our fourth build in the Town of Duck Lake,” Adamson said. “We would like to thank SHC, CMHC and our federal government for their continued support. This home will be built in partnership with Corrections Canada and the Willow Cree healing lodge, which will benefit Habitat as well as the men who obtain vocational training on our build sites. Most importantly, this project will enable a hard-working single mom and her two young daughters to have a safe, stable and affordable opportunity for home ownership.”
Quick facts:
- The three-bedroom bungalow located at 405 - 6th street in Duck Lake, will be approximately 1,000 square feet or 93 square metres.
- Construction is scheduled to be complete June 2017.
- The Federal and Provincial Governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing about $56,000 toward the construction of the home under the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) Agreement.
- In total, Habitat for Humanity has been allocated $1 million in IAH funding to support the construction of 18 homes in Saskatchewan – one in Duck Lake, two in Prince Albert, five in Saskatoon and ten in Regina.
