Government House Invites Public to Celebrate 125th Anniversary

Released on September 12, 2016

Government House in Regina will be celebrating its 125th anniversary on September 17 with a grand “At Home” public event resembling one of the open door receptions hosted at Government House during its early years.

“Government House has been a dynamic gathering point for 125 years and keeps the connection between the Crown, government and our growing population alive and relevant,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Christine Tell said.  “I encourage people to join us in celebrating this majestic National Historic Site and momentous milestone.”

This Saturday, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., the public is invited to enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, self-guided walking tours in the Edwardian Gardens, the Regina Symphony Orchestra string trio, live theatrical performances and much more.  Admission is free.

Government House was built in 1891 and first served as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Territories.  Restored to the period of Lieutenant Governor Amédée Forget who was in office from 1898-1910, the museum offers a glimpse of life at Government House at the turn of the 20th century.  Engaging exhibits and experiences are offered for all ages at Government House year round, free of charge.
