Celebrating Provincial Students' Day in Saskatchewan

Released on September 6, 2016

Education Minister Don Morgan joined students and staff in Swift Current today to celebrate Provincial Students’ Day in Saskatchewan.

“I have always enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm that exists at the outset of a new school year,” Morgan said.  “Provincial Students’ Day highlights the importance of being ready to learn in the classroom today and throughout the year.  My sincere appreciation goes out to the teachers and staff who have worked so hard to get ready to welcome students back to class.”

“Engaged students are critical to Saskatchewan’s overall growth and economic development,” Saskatchewan School Boards Association president Connie Bailey said.  “Recognizing Provincial Students’ Day acknowledges their importance to the prosperity of the province.”

Celebrated across Saskatchewan, Provincial Students’ Day also serves as a reminder to drivers about the need to respect school zone speed limits and the need for increased awareness in and around Saskatchewan’s schools.

Morgan celebrated the day by assisting CAA school safety patrollers at O.M. Irwin School as they helped students safely cross the street at the end of the school day.

“After a quiet summer, school zones and schoolyards are once again teeming with excited students,” Morgan said.  “It is extremely important that drivers are extra vigilant in school zones, so that all students can get to and from school safely.”

Since 2010, the Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed Provincial Students’ Day to coincide with the annual return to class, with nearly 180,000 students in the province beginning their new school year.
