Released on October 28, 2016
Duncan Roofing Ltd. pleaded guilty in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on October 26, 2016, to a violation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and was fined $20,000 plus an $8,000 surcharge.
The charge stems from an incident on September 12, 2014, at or near Moose Jaw, when a worker sustained serious injuries as a result of being impacted by a garbage chute.
The company was charged with contravening clause 12(a) of the regulations (being an employer, at a place of employment, fail to ensure the provision and maintenance of plant, systems of work and working environments that ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of the employer’s workers).
Although it is everyone’s responsibility to create and maintain a safe and healthy workplace, employers have the greatest responsibility to ensure everyone arrives home alive and uninjured.
The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety works with employers and workers to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses by ensuring compliance with OHS legislation through education, inspections and enforcement.
