Ten Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner families in Regina are opening the doors to a brighter future as new homeowners, thanks to financial assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan.
The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), contributed $650,000 ($65,000 per home) to support Habitat’s construction of 10 homes located at 1033 Edgar Street. The 10 homes are part of Habitat’s multi-unit family housing development, Haultain Crossing, which will house a total of 62 Habitat partner families upon completion.
Habitat works with private partners to build homes for hard-working families dreaming of homeownership. Partners for the 10 homes include $200,000 from Habitat’s Women’s Build, $200,000 from Habitat’s Men’s Build, Farm Credit Canada, Conexus Credit Union, Greystone Managed Investments Inc., Miller Thomson Lawyers, along with private donations.
“Our government is pleased to work with Habitat for Humanity once again to make home ownership a reality for families,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Tina Beaudry-Mellor said. “We know that owning your own home helps families put down roots in the community, creating a safer, more stable environment not only for themselves, but also for the neighborhood of which they are a part. This is a key part of keeping Saskatchewan strong and moving forward.”
“Habitat for Humanity Regina has provided 10 more families with not only a forever home at Haultain Crossing, but also an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty in Saskatchewan through affordable homeownership,” Habitat for Humanity Regina CEO Kelly Holmes-Binns said. “It is a project that is made possible with the support of our valued partners, community members and volunteers. As an organization, we are extremely proud of this project and look to the future with excitement as the construction of Haultain Crossing continues.”
Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed nearly $9 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters for low- to moderate-income families across the province.
Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
