Saskatchewan Proclaims National Veterinary Technician Week

Released on October 17, 2016

Today, Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart proclaimed October 16 to 22 Veterinary Technician Week in Saskatchewan.  The week recognizes the crucial role that veterinary technologists play in the health of Saskatchewan’s animals.

“Veterinary technologists are dedicated to ensuring excellent animal health care across the province,” Stewart said.  “Their contributions are often made from behind-the-scenes, but they’re essential to the health and success of Saskatchewan’s livestock sector and our province as a whole.”

More than 400 registered veterinary technologists work in Saskatchewan in a diverse range of settings, including veterinary clinics, government ministries, commercial livestock operations, and veterinary pharmaceutical and supply companies.  They work to promote animal health, public health, food safety and economic prosperity for producers through the prevention and control of animal-related diseases.

“The high standard of ethics and professionalism of Saskatchewan’s veterinary technologists cannot be understated, and to see them celebrated this week is a testament to the important role they play in veterinary medicine,” Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists President Elect Lorraine Serhienko said.

The proclamation of Veterinary Technician Week in Saskatchewan coincides with the observation of National Veterinary Technician Week across Canada and the United States.  In Saskatchewan, the week is sponsored by the Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists, which has been representing veterinary technologists in the province since 1984.
