Government Supports Habitat to Help Three Prince Albert Families Get a New Start as Homeowners

Released on November 4, 2016

Three Prince Albert families celebrated becoming official homeowners at a special ceremony held today.  The homes were constructed with support from the Government of Saskatchewan, Habitat for Humanity (Habitat), and other community partners.

“Our government is pleased to support Habitat to help three local families achieve a stable, secure home to call their own,” Crown Investments Minister and Prince Albert Carlton MLA Joe Hargrave said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Tina Beaudry-Mellor.  “This will open up many opportunities for each of these families, now and in the years ahead.  This is a part of our government’s goal to help make life more affordable and to keep Saskatchewan strong.”

“Prince Albert Habitat is happy to officially dedicate three new homes in our city,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Adamson said.  “Habitat would like to thank our major sponsors Corrections Canada, the Provincial Government and Conexus Credit Union for continued support to our cause.  These three families have expressed their gratitude many times for the opportunity to obtain a safe and sound home of their own.  We are also grateful for all the dedicated volunteers who helped make their homeownership dreams a reality.”

The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, contributed a total of $180,000 in funding to support the construction of the three homes located at 1771 - 14th Street West, 1201 - 18th Street West, and 1211 - 18th Street West.  Each of the three homes consists of four bedrooms, with the main floor of each home totalling approximately 1,000 square feet or 93 square metres.  The three homes will each have a partially developed basement.

The home located at 1771 - 14th Street West is the second house built in a partnership between CORCAN and Habitat.

CORCAN, a special operating agency of Correctional Service Canada, works with inmates through certified vocational training programs where inmates build houses while acquiring skills for the home construction industry.

Habitat has marked 1201 - 18th Street West as the third home to be constructed in partnership between Habitat and CORCAN.

Habitat purchases the materials and CORCAN provides the labour.  Conexus Credit Union (Conexus) has partnered with Habitat and provided $50,000 toward the construction of the home at 1211 - 18th Street West.

Conexus Credit Union (Conexus) has partnered with Habitat and provided $50,000 ($100,000 total) toward each of the adjacent homes at 1201 18th Street West and 1211 18th Street West.  Habitat has marked 1201 18th Street West as the third home to be constructed in partnership between Habitat and CORCAN.  Habitat purchases the materials and CORCAN provides the labour.

The home at 1211 18th Street West is also Habitat Prince Albert’s first home built via the Women Build Program (Women Build).  Women Build is Habitat International’s volunteer program for women who want to learn construction skills enabling Habitat affiliates to recruit, educate, and nurture women to build affordable houses.

Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed nearly $9 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters for low- to moderate-income families across the province.

Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
