New Day Program Facility Opens in North Battleford

Released on November 3, 2016

Today, Social Services Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor, Battlefords MLA Herb Cox and Cutknife-Turtleford MLA Larry Doke attended a grand opening ceremony for a new day program facility in North Battleford.  The Pfeifer Learning Centre is operated by Battlefords Trade and Education Centre (BTEC) and provides day program supports for 66 individuals experiencing disabilities.

“Day programs provide meaningful places where those experiencing disabilities can express themselves, make friends and participate in activities that enrich their lives,” Beaudry-Mellor said.  “Our government’s ongoing partnership with BTEC supports individuals experiencing disabilities in the North Battleford area.”

The Government of Saskatchewan provided more than $4.45 million to the new BTEC day program facility.  BTEC is a North Battleford-based organization that operates a day program and supported independent living program.  They serve 66 participants in the North Battleford area.

“BTEC will be celebrating 50 years of operation in 2017, and the opening of our new facility will provide enhanced services and more opportunities for our current and future participants,” BTEC Executive Director Mona Leece said.  “We gratefully acknowledge the tremendous support we have received from our community and the Government of Saskatchewan.”

In June 2015, a comprehensive Disability Strategy was released which includes six priority areas: transportation, respite, accessibility legislation, residential services, service co-ordination and navigation, and awareness/understanding of the rights of people experiencing disabilities.
