Released on May 30, 2016
May 29 to June 4 has been declared Victims and Survivors of Crime Week in Saskatchewan, coinciding with the national week of the same name. This year’s theme is “The Power of Our Voices.”Formerly Victims of Crime Awareness Week, the name has been changed across the country to acknowledge that many individuals have overcome their victimization and no longer identify themselves as victims, but as survivors.
The week provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the needs of victims and survivors of crime and tragedy. It also recognizes the important role Victims Services staff and volunteers play in the recovery process.
“These volunteers are among the most dedicated, compassionate, and all-around inspiring people in this province,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “Their selfless work improves the health and well-being of Saskatchewan as a whole. We all owe them a great deal of thanks.”
In 2014-15, roughly 160 volunteer Victim Support Workers in Saskatchewan helped nearly 8,500 people. To show the province’s appreciation, Minister Wyant is hosting a luncheon at the Legislative Building for long-term volunteers who have completed 10, 15, and 20 years of service.
Victims Services programs are spread out across the province and provide a range of services. That includes support immediately following a crime, specialized responses to domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as support for children who are required to testify in court.
